Do You Need Jet Ski Insurance in the UK?

Last Published: 22/05/2026

The answer to whether you need insurance for a jet ski is not a simple yes or no. Unlike cars, where holding liability insurance is mandatory in the UK, there is no national legal requirement for jet ski owners to be insured. However, there are several situations where you will need to show proof of cover, while the potential cost of an uninsured accident makes insurance well worth considering.

This guide looks at:
  • What jet ski insurance does and does not cover
  • When you may need to show proof of insurance
  • Why cover may be worth having even if not legally required

What Can Jet Ski Insurance Cover?

There are two core types of jet ski insurance, plus a range of optional add-ons depending on your needs.

Third party liability

Jet Ski

Third Party Liability insurance helps protect you financially if you are found responsible for causing injury or death to someone else, damaging their property, or causing pollution while using your jet ski. It can also help cover related legal costs if a claim is made against you, and the cost of recovering or removing your jet ski if it is wrecked.

Some insurers offer a fixed limit for this type of cover; others let you choose your level of protection, typically between £1 million and £5 million.

Vessel loss or damage

Vessel Loss or Damage insurance helps cover the cost of repairing or replacing your jet ski if it is damaged or lost due to events such as accident, theft, fire, or severe weather. You can usually choose the level of cover, which should reflect what it would cost to replace your jet ski with one of similar age, performance, and value.

You will typically also be able to select an excess, which is the first portion of any claim you agree to pay yourself. Choosing a higher excess usually results in a lower annual premium.

Optional Add-on Covers

A range of additional covers are available to extend your policy, depending on your requirements:

Cover Option What It Does
Trailer / Trolley

Covers loss or damage to your trailer or trolley due to events such as theft, fire, or accidental collision. Note: damage caused by your trailer while being towed is typically covered under your motor vehicle policy, not your jet ski policy.

Personal Belongings

Covers repair or replacement of personal belongings lost or damaged while on the jet ski, up to your selected limit.

Marina Benefits

Protects your no-claims discount and removes the excess for claims arising while your jet ski is moored or stored at a specified marina.

Mooring Fees

Covers mooring costs if you cannot use your jet ski due to serious injury or insured loss or damage to the vessel.

Search, Rescue and Evacuation

Covers search and rescue costs if a person is lost overboard, up to your selected limit.

NCD Protection

Keeps your no claims discount intact, providing you make no more than one claim in a year.

Jet ski insurance can vary significantly between providers so always check the policy wording carefully to understand what is and is not covered.

What Are Common Exclusions & Policy Requirements?

While every policy is different, common jet ski insurance exclusions include:

  • Using the jet ski for an illegal or non-permitted purpose.
  • Navigating outside the geographical limits of the policy.
  • Failure to ensure the jet ski is properly manned or maintained.
  • Reckless acts by anyone in charge of the jet ski, such as using it while under the influence of drink or drugs, or ignoring navigation regulations.
  • Wear, tear, depreciation, or similar deterioration.
  • Damage by insects, vermin, barnacles, marine growth, corrosion, rot, rust etc.

Most insurers will also require you to:

  • Take reasonable steps to look after the jet ski.
  • Ensure anyone using it is competent to do so.
  • Ensure that if moored, the jet ski is in a safe, properly maintained location.
  • Comply with any regulations relating to the safe operation of the jet ski.
  • Provide them with accurate, current information when arranging cover.
  • Always be honest in your dealings with them.

Policy exclusions and requirements will vary between insurers so it is again important to check policy wordings carefully.

When Is Jet Ski Insurance Mandatory?

While there is no universal legal requirement for jet ski insurance in the UK, there are several common situations where proof of cover will be needed:

Marinas, harbours & launch sites

Yacht Marine

Many UK marina, harbour, and launch site operators require valid third-party cover before you can use their facilities. Requirements vary, but £3 million of liability cover is a common minimum.

UK inland waterways

If you plan to use the UK’s inland waterways, you may well need a boat licence. As part of the licence application, you must provide proof you hold at least £2 million third-party liability insurance.

Cruising abroad

Many European countries make boat insurance mandatory. For example, Spain, Italy, and Greece require you to carry proof of cover in the local language.

Jet ski club / association membership

Most UK jet ski clubs and national bodies make third-party insurance a condition of membership, typically requiring a minimum of £2 million to £3 million cover.

Marine mortgages / loans

If you have financed your jet ski with a marine mortgage or loan, your lender will usually require you to insure the vessel against loss or damage for at least the value of the outstanding loan throughout the repayment period.

Why Get Jet Ski Insurance If It Is Not Mandatory?

Even when jet ski insurance is not mandatory, there are good reasons to have it:

  • If you are responsible for injuring someone while using your jet ski, compensation claims could easily exceed £1 million. Add potential legal defence costs and the financial case for liability cover becomes clear.
  • Jet skis can be expensive so insurance can help protect your outlay by helping cover the cost of repairs or replacement if your machine is damaged or lost due to an accident, theft, vandalism, or severe weather.

Key takeaway: Having jet ski insurance may not always be a legal requirement in the UK but owners may still  be asked to prove they are covered. Besides this, the financial impact of having an uninsured jet ski incident can be significant, so being insured reduces this risk.
